Construction to start today on Milpitas light-rail station

Today, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will begin construction on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Milpitas Station in Milpitas, Calif.
Contractor Skanska Shimmick Herzog (SSH), a joint venture with LAN/T.Y. Lin, will begin demolishing buildings at the station’s site, VTA officials said in a prepared statement. The demolition’s first phase will occur east of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
The Milpitas BART Station will feature a ground-level concourse, below-ground boarding platforms and a seamless connection to VTA’s Montague light-sail station. The Milpitas station is projected to initially average 10,000 riders daily, with BART trains expected to arrive every 7.5 minutes, VTA officials said.
The station construction is part of the BART Silicon Valley project, a 16-mile extension of BART’s system to San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara.
The project’s first phase is the Berryessa Extension, a 10-mile, two-station extension, beginning in Fremont south of the future BART Warm Springs Station and proceeding in the former UP right of way through Milpitas, the location of the first station, and then to the Berryessa area of north San Jose, at the second station.
VTA is continuing to develop the project’s second six-mile phase, which includes a 5.1-mile-long subway tunnel through downtown San Jose, and ends at grade in Santa Clara near a Caltrain station. Construction on that phase will begin when additional funding is secured, VTA officials said.
