California intercity rail ridership rises in two corridors, falls in another in December

California transportation officials expected the economic downturn and falling gas prices to drive down ridership on the state's intercity passenger-rail lines in December. That was true on one route, but not on two others.
The Auburn-to-San Jose Capitol Corridor carried 130,261 passengers, up 9 percent compared with December 2007 and a new December record. Ticket revenue rose 8.4 percent to $1.8 million.
The Oakland-Sacramento-Bakersfield San Joaquins service carried 80,920 passengers, up 9.3 percent. Revenue increased 8.9 percent to $2.8 million.
However, the San Diego-to-San Luis Obispo Pacific Surfliner posted a ridership and revenue loss, perhaps reflecting a more significant economic downturn in southern California than in northern California, according to the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority. Ridership dropped 8.1 percent to 195,887 and ticket revenue declined 5.3 percent to $3.5 million.
