CTA board advances three projects

Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) board recently approved contracts on three projects designed to make stations more customer friendly.
Parsons Transportation Group Inc. received a $719,900 contract to provide architectural and engineering services to upgrade public address systems at 37 stations.
The new systems would provide digital broadcast of audio and visual announcements in public areas, such as fare-control areas, stairways, corridors and platforms. Next year, the authority plans to begin installing the systems, which will take three years to fully implement.
The systems would be funded by Federal Transit Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Camp Dresser & McKee Inc. received a $570,000 contract to design and prepare bid documents for CTA’s Front Door Program, designed to make improvements to seven station entrances and improve bicycle access at nine stations.
The project includes upgrading station identification signage, adding new fencing, and reconfiguring turnstiles, lighting, heating, benches, landscaping and windbreaks. The improvements also include enhancing connections from rail to bus routes.
Front Door Program projects would be funded by FTA and Regional Transportation Authority. Bids are expected to go out next year.
Finally, Globetrotters Engineering Corp. received a $642,500 contract to replace 10 Loop subway escalators. The project is part of CTA’s escalator modernization plan to replace or rehabilitate escalators — some up to 60 years old — throughout the system.
