The first new Mark V model SkyTrains entered commercial service yesterday on TransLink's Expo Line in Vancouver, British Columbia.
TransLink purchased 235 Mark V cars, which will create 47 trainsets, from Alstom in December 2020. It is TransLink's largest order of SkyTrain cars, TransLink officials said in a press release. The trainsets were manufactured and tested in Canada.
The Mark V series trains will support the upcoming Broadway Subway and Surrey-Langley SkyTrain projects. Additionally, TransLink officials anticipate a 20% increase in ridership on the Expo Line in the next five years. The Mark V train purchase was funded in part through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program in partnership with the governments of Canada and British Columbia and TransLink.
The driverless light rail Mark V trainsets can each carry 672 passengers, a 25% increase in capacity from the current Mark III trains, Alstom officials said in a separate press release.
