On Friday, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) announced it reached a tentative four-year agreement with the Amalgamated Transit Union, Service Employees International Union and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which had threatened to launch a strike if a contract wasn’t negotiated soon.
The tentative pact “represents sacrifice and compromise, yet achieves the goals that needed to be accomplished in this negotiation,” said BART general Manager Dorothy Dugger in a prepared statement.
The agency needed to obtain $100 million in labor cost savings to help close an estimated $310 million budget deficit over the next four years, she said.
