California's North County Transit District opens passing track

North County Transit District (NCTD) recently began operating COASTER commuter-rail trains on a new 1.7-mile, $6.2 million passing track in Encinitas, Calif.

The track will enable dispatchers to better manage traffic. Every day, 50 freight, COASTER and Amtrak trains travel along the corridor.

NCTD owns and operates 60 track miles along the California coast between downtown San Diego and the Orange County line. Twenty-two miles now are double-tracked, with passing tracks located in every city along the line.

The opening of the Encinitas passing track capped off a good month for NCTD. In March, COASTER recorded its highest-ever ridership at 136,192.
