Norfolk Southern Railway has named its terminal in Elkhart, Indiana, the terminal of the year based on safety performance and reliable service.
The terminal has previously been recognized by NS for its safety culture, reflected in its low injury reports, NS officials in an online "Story Yard" article.
The terminal's engineering department has logged more than five years without a reportable injury, followed by its car team at more than three, locomotive team at nearly two and transportation team at more than 180 days, they added.
Additionally, the Elkhart facility has delivered strong operational results, with improved fluidity and increased capacity noted of late. Among recent accomplishments, the terminal processed more than 1,100 rail cars in a single shift without an accident, while managing unplanned outages outside of the employees control, NS officials said.
The Class I credits the strong collaboration between the different teams as a reason for the terminal's performance.
"Transportation partners closely with mechanical and engineering to make sure we’re executing as one team," said NS Assistant Superintendent AJ Jeffers. "We reinforce a speak up culture where everyone is encouraged to raise concerns, challenge the status quo, and contribute ideas."
