The Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) has selected Stadler to manufacture 21 light-rail vehicles for the planned Austin Light Rail system.
The announcement followed a competitive procurement process that evaluated elements including a firm’s experience, personnel qualifications, technical approach and design innovation, ATP officials said in a press release.
"ATP is excited to have Stadler join the Austin Light Rail team to design a vehicle with features never before delivered in the United States," said Greg Canally, ATP CEO.
The 21 vehicles will be based on Stadler’s CITYLINK model. CITYLINK trains incorporate a low-floor design that eliminates steps within the aisle to increase accessibility for passengers. Each trainset is designed to carry about 240 passengers, seating and standing. The design will also include ADA-compliant zones and multipurpose areas for bikes, luggage and strollers.
The ATP Board authorized an initial $39 million for preliminary work under the approved contract. Work beyond the initial amount will require future action by ATP’s Board of Directors with the total fixed-price contract not to exceed $352 million.
The award marks the conclusion of a series of major procurements completed in the last 18 months. ATP anticipates light-rail service will begin service in 2033. The system will feature 15 stations along nearly 10 miles of track. Trainsets will be all electric and run every five to 10 minutes.
