Virginia Railway Express (VRE) recently exercised an option to purchase 50 additional bi-level passenger cars from Sumitomo Corp. of America and partner Nippon Sharyo Ltd.
VRE previously ordered 11 bi-level cars from Sumitomo and Nippon Sharyo in May 2005. The contract now totals $109 million.
Replacing VRE’s current single-level cars, the vehicles will feature seating for up to 140 passengers. The cars will be delivered between 2006’s and late 2008.
