Rail News: Mechanical
On Jan. 30, Canadian locomotive builder RailPower Technologies Corp. announced it formed U.S. subsidiary RailPower Corp., which will be based in Erie, Pa.
RailPower named Bill Hackett — who had been serving the company as a consultant — general manager to head the subsidiary. RailPower Chief Financial Officer Alain Voisin will serve as the subsidiary's vice president and secretary; President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier, and Chief Technology Officer Frank Donnelly will serve on the subsidiary's board.
"Having a U.S.-based operation is a logical step as we build up our U.S. commercialization program," said Maier in a prepared statement.
RailPower markets the hybrid, battery-powered 2,000-horsepower Green Goat™ and 1,000-horsepower Green Kid™ switching locomotives, which are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions, and cut fuel usage compared with other switchers.
The company recently sold units to Railserve Inc. and CANAC Inc., and reached lease/trial agreements with Canadian Pacific Railway, CSX Transportation and Burlington Northern Santa Fe subsidiary Los Angeles Junction Railway Co., which plan to test units during the next three to six months. Union Pacific Railroad and Pacific Harbor Line Inc. tested units last year.
