Rail News: Mechanical
Dallas, Garland & Northeastern Railroad Inc. recently purchased two N-ViroMotive™ locomotives from National Railway Equipment Co. — the first of RailAmerica Inc.’s 42 U.S. and Canadian short lines to obtain the environmentally friendly switchers.
The N-ViroMotives feature two diesel engine-generator sets that each can produce 700 horsepower. The two-engine models can be modified to include three engines.
N-ViroMotives are designed to reduce NOx emissions by 80 percent, and particulate matter emissions by 50 percent to 65 percent; reduce fuel usage between 35 percent and 50 percent; and improve tractive effort adhesion efficiency between 50 percent and 65 percent compared with a conventional switcher.
RailAmerica plans to acquire N-ViroMotives for its other railroads, said Director of Locomotive Operations Roger Robinson in a prepared statement.
