Members of the Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM) and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 19 have ratified contracts with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) covering employees of the MTA Long Island Railroad (LIRR).
TCU/IAM and IAM District 19 are two of five unions that began a strike on May 16 after coalition representatives and the MTA were unable to come to an agreement after more than three years of unsuccessful bargaining. The strike ended on May 19 when the unions and MTA came to a tentative agreement.
The others unions in the coalition — the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) — have not yet ratified agreements.
Meanwhile, TCU/IAM members ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with BNSF Railway. The five-year agreement covers BNSF Union 41 members at the railroad's Fort Worth headquarters and grants members wage increases totaling 17.5% over five years (18.8% compounded) with retroactive pay beginning July 1, 2025, as well as accelerated enhancements in vacation and preserved health care benefits.
More than 96% of BNSF’s workforce is currently covered under ratified agreements, BNSF officials said in a press release.
