Thirty-seven of 65 eligible Portland & Western Railroad Inc. (P&W) operating employees selected the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) division of the Teamsters Rail Conference as their collective bargaining representative, according to a March 16 election governed by the National Mediation Board. The workers previously were unrepresented.
During the past two years, BLET has organized eight short lines, adding 750 members to the union. In addition to P&W, BLET has scored representation victories at the New York & Atlantic Railway Co., Great Western Railway of Colorado L.L.C., St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railway Co., Utah Railway Co., Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad Corp., Indiana Southern Railroad and The Texas-Mexican Railway Co.
Owned and operated by Genesee & Wyoming Inc., the 444-mile P&W annually moves more than 60,000 carloads of paper, steel, grain, forest products, chemicals, aggregates, fertilizers and consumer goods.
