On Aug. 27, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) announced the Port of Portland's limits recently were expanded to include Auburn, Maine, as a port of entry.
The designation enables the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection to perform on-site inspections of international containers arriving at St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad Co.'s (SL&A) Auburn intermodal facility.
"[The designation] will allow us to work with the state of Maine and city of Auburn on achieving our mutual goals of having this facility become a generator of economic development," said SL&A President Mario Brault in a prepared statement. "SL&A's objective is to utilize its seamless connection with Canadian National’s double-stack network and the five deepwater ports served by CN to promote Auburn as a competitive gateway for the New England import and export community."
Owned and operated by GWI, the 260-mile SL&A operates between Portland and Ste. Rosalie, Quebec, where it interchanges with CN.
