International Transportation Service (ITS) has launched its South Slip Fill Project, a $365 million terminal expansion at the Port of Long Beach, California.

When completed in December 2028, the expanded terminal is expected to increase ITS' cargo-handling capacity up to 50%, ITS officials said July 11 in a press release.

A major aspect of the expansion is the 560-foot extension of the existing wharf. This upgrade, which begins with filling in a 19-acre horseshoe-shaped gap at the terminal, will make it possible for ITS to simultaneously berth two 18,000 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container vessels.

The Dutra and Griffith Co. joint venture has been contracted to deliver the project. Work is scheduled to begin this month, ITS officials said.

"This project strengthens America's supply chain by investing in infrastructure the right way — using local labor and U.S.-made materials," said Kim Holtermand, CEO ITS Long Beach.

ITS is the leading marine terminal operator at the Port of Long Beach. It provides container cargo handling and stevedoring services. The Port of Long Beach is served on-dock by the Pacific Harbor Line, which provides connections to BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad
