Transport Canada yesterday announced the launch of two calls for funding applications under the Rail Safety Improvement Program involving education/awareness efforts and infrastructure, technology and research projects.
The funding opportunities will support projects that improve safety at grade crossings and along rail corridors, helping to prevent trespassing and rail-related injuries and fatalities, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.
Funding applications are due Aug. 21 for education/awareness initiatives, and Sept. 4 for infrastructure, technology and research projects.
"The Rail Safety Improvement Program helps communities across Canada address safety concerns and raise awareness about the potential dangers at railway crossings and other high-risk areas along railway tracks," said Canada Minister of Transport Steven MacKinnon. "Through investments in infrastructure, innovation, research and education, the government of Canada is helping reduce risks [and] strengthen the transportation network."
Since its inception in 2016, the Rail Safety Improvement Program has supported more than 1,200 projects across Canada with more than CA$230 million, Transport Canada officials said.
