CSX has upgraded its locomotives with technology that reduces fuel consumption, emissions and operating costs.
The Class I's Automatic Engine Start-Stop (AESS) system shuts down locomotives when not in use and restarts them when operations resume, CSX officials posted yesterday on the company's website. The technology is part of CSX's broader sustainability initiatives.
The AESS Assist system was introduced in 2024 to improve shutdown performance and provide additional battery support during engine cranking. This support is expected to extend overall locomotive battery life, CSX officials said.
In collaboration with Wabtec Corp., CSX has implemented software upgrades to the AESS platform. These enhancements have extended the allowable engine shutdown time without requiring idling, further reducing fuel consumption and emissions, CSX officials said.
CSX created a short video about the technology, available to view here.
