The Valley Metro Rail board has approved a base five-year contract with Alternate Concepts Inc. (ACI) to provide rail transportation service for the agency's 26-mile system in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, Ariz.

The contract calls for ACI to continue to manage, coordinate and control operations for Valley Metro's rail system.

ACI has been providing service operations for Valley Metro Rail before the agency's light-rail line opened in December 2008, agency officials said in a press release.

"After nine years of providing rail service for Valley Metro, the men and women of ACI continue to have a strong commitment to quality operations," said Valley Metro Chief Operations Officer Ray Abraham.

In fiscal-year 2016, the agency's rail system served 15.6 million passengers with an on-time performance rating of 93.4 percent.
