The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has approved funding for safety upgrades at 68 rail crossings in 11 counties.
The Indiana & Ohio Railway Co. (IORY) will install LED lights at 67 grade crossings by Sept. 18, 2026. PUCO will provide up to $502,500 — or $7,500 per crossing — from the State Grade Crossing Protection Fund. IORY, a Genesee & Wyoming Inc. short line, will pay any additional costs, PUCO officials said in a press release.
The new LED lights will be installed at five grade crossings in Allen, eight in Champaign, 17 in Clark, four in Clinton, six in Fairfield, five in Fayette, 13 in Franklin, three in Logan, two in Madison, two in Shelby, and two in Warren counties.
In a separate approval, PUCO greenlit $335,624 in federal funds for CSX to install flashing lights and gates at the Walnut Street grade crossing in the village of Anna in Shelby County. CSX must complete the upgrade by June 17, 2026.
Local government entities may seek additional funding from PUCO for more safety improvements, such as rumble strips, improved signage or illumination, at the dedicated crossings. Funding for such improvements may not exceed $5,000 per project.
