NS adds carbon offset calculator to online shipment emission analyzer

The “Green Machine” has another gear. Yesterday, Norfolk Southern Corp. announced it enhanced its online Green Machine carbon footprint analyzer, which enables shippers to calculate the environmental impacts of moving freight by rail or truck.

Accessible at www.nscorp.com/footprints, the analyzer now features a carbon offset calculator designed to compute the estimated monetary value of reducing carbon emissions by switching freight from truck to rail. Shippers can enter a move’s freight tonnage and length of haul, and the calculator will determine the value based on carbon offsets’ current market price.

Last year, an NS shipper on average moved 42,640 tons of freight 576 miles. Using those figures for a truck-to-rail impact, the Green Machine determined emission reductions would average 1,909 tons — the equivalent of taking 1,717 automobiles off the road or planting 10,629 trees, according to NS.
