The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) commuter railroad on Oct. 6 reached a milestone of 100 million total riders since operations began in 1992.
VRE will hold a celebration to mark the milestone once the ongoing federal government shutdown comes to an end, VRE officials said in a press release.
The milestone also marks VRE's ridership rebound since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 100,000 more passengers traveled on the commuter railroad in July 2025 than in July 2024.
The VRE connects central and northern Virginia with Washington, D.C. and operates two lines — Manassas and Fredericksburg — that serve 19 stations. VRE is co-owned and co-operated by the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission.
