Trains on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Orange Line are now cleared to operate up to 55 mph in both directions between Assembly Station and North Station.
The clearance follows a similar increase implemented on the line in August 2025 between Oak Grove and Assembly Station. The increased speed clearance can be attributed to track improvement work completed as part of the MBTA's Track Improvement Program and recent infrastructure work, MBTA officials said in a press release.
The MBTA is continuing to upgrade its subway and commuter-rail systems. Subway work scheduled for November includes critical Green Line central tunnel signal modernization; accessibility upgrades on the Green Line; switch work near Wonderland on the Blue Line and between Broadway and North Quincy on the Red Line; and signal pre-commissioning on the Red Line.
Near-future commuter-rail improvements include work on the South Station Signal and Track Improvements Project and supporting work for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's West Roxbury Parkway Bridge replacement project.
