Caltrain to retrofit bike cars with additional racks

Last week, the Caltrain board approved a plan to increase bike capacity on its commuter trains by almost 30 percent.
Under then $200,000 program, the agency will remove seats and install additional racks to make room for eight more bicycles on each bike car. Caltrain's gallery trainsets now will have space for 40 bikes; Bombardier trains will have room for 24 bikes.
In addition, the agency plans to assign two bike cars on peak-period trains as operations allow. Caltrain currently serves more than 41,000 riders each weekday. Of those, about 2,400 are bike riders. The agency first allowed bikes onboard in 1992.
