Alstom yesterday announced the opening of its $75 million Plant 4 manufacturing facility in Hornell, New York, where it will produce rail cars for Metra.

It is one of the only facilities in the United States capable of producing stainless steel car body shells for passenger-rail vehicles, Alstom officials said in a press release. Previously, Alstom would manufacture  body shells for U.S. projects at a facility in Brazil. Alstom will produce its recent $740 million order of 200 multilevel commuter cars for the Chicago commuter railroad.

Alstom worked with 40 contractors to build and outfit the facility.

The car body manufacturing process involves welding together primary parts to create assemblies as long as 80 feet. Plant 4 will deploy automated welding robots to increase precision, company officials said. The expansion at Alstom's existing Hornell site will support the existing 390 jobs, as well as lead to over 250 new ones.

Plant 4 is dedicated to the late James Griffin, who was executive director of Hornell's industrial development agency.
