Early next year, North Carolina Global TransPark plans to begin building a 5.8-mile track to serve a major tenant in a 2,400-acre industrial park near Kinston.
The track, which will connect with an existing North Carolina Railroad Co. line, is scheduled to be completed in January 2012. The project includes a rail bridge and 10 grade crossings.
The track will serve Spirit AeroSystem, which is building a 500,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in the park. The company plans to ship large aircraft fuselage sections and wing spars to Morehead City via rail.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation's Rail Division is overseeing project planning and construction at the park, which already offers air and land transportation options, and access to deepwater ports in Morehead City and Wilmington.
“Having rail coming into our project truly makes the TransPark a multi-modal operation,” said Global TransPark Authority Executive Director Darlene Waddell in a prepared statement.
