Georgia Ports shares July, August cargo numbers

For July and August, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) logged 1.03 million 20-foot-equivalent units of cargo moved across all its facilities. Total cargo moved during the first two months of the fiscal year is up 2.2% from the same period last year.

In August alone, the Port of Savannah moved 529,523 20-foot-equivalent units of container cargo, a less than 1% decline in total TEUs handled compared to August 2025. Export loads were 117,242 TEUs, up nearly 4,700 TEUs, or 4.2%. Import loads totaled 265,859, up about 3,800 TEUs, or 1.5%, GPA officials said in a press release.

The Port of Brunswick handled 60,572 units of autos and heavy machinery in August, down 5% from prior year. Heavy machinery reached 4,726 units, up nearly 22%, but U.S. luxury vehicle manufacturers are facing increased competition from domestic Chinese producers, contributing to fewer U.S. auto exports, GPA officials said.

"Asia weather and Panama Canal water levels are being felt in August supply chains. For September, we are seeing strong numbers on the water and the Suez Canal seems to be picking up," said Griff Lynch, CEO of GPA. "The customer demand is present for Savannah, however typhoons in Asia and El Nino in Panama are affecting volumes."
