Houston METRO's light-rail ridership reaches 50-million mark

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) recently reached a ridership milestone: The agency carried its 50 millionth light-rail passenger.

Since opening in January 2004, the 7.5-mile Red Line has surpassed ridership projections, averaging 43,000 to 45,000 passenger boardings each weekday — a figure METRO didn't expect to reach for more than a decade.

The agency currently is adding five light-rail lines in and around Houston. In June, METRO broke ground on its East End light-rail line, which will connect downtown Houston to the Magnolia Transit Center when it opens in 2010. Later this year, the agency expects to begin construction on the North and Southeast corridors.
