President Donald Trump late last week said that the proposed $85 billion merger between Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway "sounds good to me," according to national media reports of the president's remarks.
The president's comments follow his recent meeting with UP CEO Jim Vena, who met Trump in the Oval Office as UP and NS seek the Surface Transportation Board's approval of the proposed merger, which was announced in late July.
"Union Pacific is a great railroad," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Sept. 19 as reported by Reuters.
Trump's support could make a difference in regulatory proceedings, as some rail customers have indicated concern about the merger between two of the four largest freight railroads in the United States. A combined UP-NS network would be the first freight railroad to own and operate a coast-to-coast rail line in the nation.
