The Regional Transportation District-Denver's (RTD) transit police department recently launched a new security initiative designed to increase officer presence and provide more customer support across its rail and bus systems.
A Bus and Rail Impact Team (BRIT) now deploys officers to locations identified through security-related data to conduct focused patrols and support high-volume event security. The team consists of five members of the transit police department — a sergeant, corporal and three officers — who were chosen because of their ability to balance engagement, enforcement and rapid response, RTD officials said in a press release.
The BRIT patrols are in addition to those already occurring within the district, they said. The team’s deployment areas will be reviewed and adjusted regularly, and the team will support police operations with local partner law enforcement agencies.
“BRIT targets high-incident areas ... with recurring trespassing or disorderly conduct issues, as well as peak ridership times,” said RTD Police Commander Jonathan Holloway, who oversees the team. “By focusing on hot spots, riding key routes and responding rapidly to priority calls, the team helps disrupt illegal activity and improve the safety of operators and customers.”
In addition, the police department on Sunday plans to introduce two task forces dedicated to fare enforcement. Officers will conduct fare checks and educate customers about fare options and RTD’s customer code of conduct.
