Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight

Rail supplier news from Miner, Parsons, Saft, Siemens, Alstom and Keolis (July 12)


Miner Enterprises Inc. will supply outlet gates and hatch covers for 3,800 new high-capacity grain hopper cars ordered by Canadian Pacific and CN. The new cars – 2,800 for CP and 1,000 for CN – are being built by National Steel Car Ltd., Miner officials said in a press release.

Sound Transit has selected Parsons to provide final design and construction engineering services for the $1.3 billion Federal Way Link Extension in Seattle, Parsons officials said in a press release. Parsons will work as part of a team led by Kiewit Corp. The contract includes 7.8 miles of dual-track, at-grade and elevated light-rail transit; three stations; rail systems; and associated ancillary facilities.

Saft has begun battery system deliveries to CRRC Sifang America’s rail-car manufacturing plant in Chicago. The batteries will provide backup power to vital systems on the Chicago Transit Authority’s 7000 series rail cars being built at the plant. The contract includes an initial order of battery box assemblies for 400 trains with options for an additional 446 assemblies, Saft officials said in a press release.

Siemens Mobility has received Stadtwerke Munchen's order for 73 additional Avenio trams worth nearly $225 million. Once the first vehicles are delivered in 2021, they will operate throughout the Munich tram network, Siemens officials said in a press release.

Alstom will supply its OptONIX traction system for 402 metro cars for Xi’an Metro in China. The contract is valued at about $47 million, Alstom officials said in a press release. Alstom’s joint venture Shanghai Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment Co. Ltd. will manufacture the traction systems, while Xi’an Alstom Yongji Electric Equipment Co. Ltd. will supply the traction motors.

Keolis was awarded a five-and-a-half-year contract from Ile-de-France Mobilites, the public transportation authority in Paris, to launch and operate Tram 9. Now under construction, Tram 9 will run on a 6-mile, 19-station route between the Porte de Choisy Metro station and the center of Orly, Keolis officials said in a press release.
