An Alaska Railroad Corp. (ARRC) freight train derailed June 6 on the Curry loop track about 22 miles north of Talkeetna, damaging a diesel fuel tank.

No injuries were reported among the three ARRC employees operating the train, and the cause of the derailment was unclear, ARRC officials said in a press release.

The Curry loop track provides access to a quarry used for ballast, riprap and gravel. The derailment is not anticipated to impact operations on the ARRC main line, which stretches 470 miles from Seward to Fairbanks.

Damage was limited to a punctured 2,600-gallon diesel fuel tank on the derailed locomotive. The tank was secured and initial containment strategies were put in place the same day, according to the press release.

"ARRC staff worked quickly to notify the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and respond to the spill," ARRC officials said.
