KCS forms steering committee to mold, manage safety plan

Kansas City Southern is adopting a new safety approach to compensate for General Director of Safety and Training Tom Leopold's late 2003 resignation. The Class I recently formed a safety steering committee, which plans to place greater accountability on front-line supervisors.

Comprising senior-level managers from transportation, engineering, mechanical, field operations, training, maintenance of way, purchasing and other key departments, the committee is charged with developing an annual operating plan to ensure safe operations, providing funding and resources to help execute the plan, establishing and reviewing measures and goals, and adjusting the plan to ensure continuous improvements.

"As we move forward, front-line supervisors will have the opportunity to use their specific expertise and knowledge of their own work areas to ensure safe operations, while receiving the necessary support from management," said KCS Senior Vice President of Operations Jerry Heavin in a prepared statement.

Next week, the committee plans to hold its first meeting in Shreveport, La.
