Yesterday, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) board approved an $18.8 million program under which the authority will replace public-address systems in 39 underground Metrorail stations and closed-circuit television monitors at 30 stations.

The current equipment was installed more than 30 years ago and has deteriorated. WMATA plans to install the equipment during the next three years.
