• United Group Ltd. obtained a $78 million order from Australian transport company Queensland Rail for 12 diesel-electric locomotives. United Group subsidiary UGL Rail will supply the locomotives from its New South Wales, Australia, plant between July and December 2009. The contract includes an option for six additional locomotives.
• Bombardier Transportation received the first five-year option order from the Las Vegas Monorail Co. to operate and maintain a monorail system in Las Vegas, Nev. The order is valued at $58 million. Bombardier built the fully automated, four-mile monorail, and has operated and maintained the system since it opened in 2004. The dual-lane elevated guideway system features nine four-car trains and seven stations, and serves the east side of Las Vegas’ strip.
• International rail consulting firm Interfleet Technology added Steve Cook as a principal consultant for its railway systems and strategy team. He previously held senior-level positions at Balfour Beatty plc, Jarvis plc and Metronet Rail, and has experience in heavy, light and underground rail. Cook helped manage projects for the British railway system’s 140-mile Thameslink, including track renewals in tunnels.
