The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) reported increased Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) commuter-rail ridership and steady seaport volume in the first half of 2026.
Over the first half of the year, PATH carried 31.4 million passengers, a 7.5% jump from the same period of 2025. This was the highest January through June ridership total recorded since 2020, PANYNJ officials said in a press release.
Ridership in June totaled 5.9 million passengers. June was also the system’s busiest month since March 2020. Average Saturday and Sunday ridership in the month reached 144,391 and 114,146 passengers, respectively. Both were the highest recorded for any month since PATH began tracking the metric, and both were more than 25% above their June 2025 levels.
Preliminary counts also showed PATH served 145,277 riders on July 4, a 33% jump from Independence Day 2025.
Meanwhile, the Port of New York and New Jersey moved 4.4 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo during the first six months of the year, on par with the same period of 2025.
June traffic spiked, with overall volume through the port at 769,422 TEUs, an 11.9% jump from June 2025. The port handled 503,016 loaded TEUs in June, up 7.6% from June the prior year. The traffic surge was due to an earlier, front-loaded peak shipping season driven by changing federal trade policy, port officials said.
