Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

U.S. Class I employment steady in August

Class Is employed 122,792 people in the United States as of mid-August, which represents a 0.02% decrease compared with July employment levels and a 4.94% increase from August 2022 levels, according to Surface Transportation Board data.

Four out of six employment categories logged month-to-month increases. They were: executives, officials and staff assistants, up 0.29% to 8,232 employees; maintenance of way and structures, 0.17% to 28,994; transportation (other than train and engine), 0.06% to 4,879; and transportation (train and engine), 0.02% to 52,102.

The professional and administrative group decreased 0.86% to 10,327 emloyees in August, while the maintenance of equipment and stores category fell 0.12% to 18,258.

Year over year, all categories logged increases: transportation (train and engine), up 6.85%; professional and administrative, 5.47%; maintenance of equipment and stores, 4.87%; executives, officials and staff assistants, 4.2%; transportation (other than train and engine), 3.46%; and maintenance of way and structures, 1.96%.
