Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
One year after opening, the Interstate MAX Yellow Line is making Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) officials proud. During the past year, almost four million passengers rode the 5.8-mile line, which connects the Rose Quarter and Exposition Center.
TriMet previously operated bus service in the area. On weekdays, the light-rail line currently carries 12,000 passengers — a 92 percent increase compared with the former Interstate Avenue bus line.
Along the line, communities have created transit-friendly environments featuring sidewalks, and traffic and bike lanes, and new business development has increased 50 percent since the line opened.
TriMet officials now are designing the 8.3-mile I-205/Portland Mall light-rail line, which would extend service to Gateway Transit Center and Clackamas Town Center, and along the Portland Mall between Union Station and Portland State University. In addition, the agency recently completed final design for the 14.7-mile Washington County commuter-rail line between Wilsonville and Beaverton.
