Caltrain provided over 12.5 million rides in fiscal-year 2026, which ended June 30, officials from the California commuter railroad announced on July 20.

Monthly ridership surpassed 1 million each month from March through June 2026. Average weekday ridership surpassed 40,000, marking a 36.9% increase over average FY25 weekday ridership.

Average weekend ridership was about 150% of pre-pandemic levels, a benchmark for measuring ridership recovery. From the beginning through the end of FY26, total ridership increased from about 64.4% of pre-pandemic levels to 81.5%.

Multiple major events this year brought thousands of new riders to the service, including World Cup matches, the Super Bowl and Stanford’s BTS concert.

Caltrain adopted a balanced FY27 operating budget in June, but will still face an estimated $75 million funding gap in FY28.

Caltrain operates along California's San Francisco Peninsula, through the South Bay to San Jose and Gilroy.
