Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Today, Sound Transit, Seattle, King County Metro and Community Transit officials will hold an open house in downtown Seattle to discuss the Central Link project, which will extend light-rail service to the downtown area.
Officials from contractor Balfour Beatty also will discuss construction plans, including the temporary closure of the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, scheduled to begin in September. The tunnel will be closed for up to two years so it can be retrofitted to accommodate both light-rail trains and buses.
Sound Transit and other agencies currently are completing $16 million worth of projects designed to mitigate the effects of the light-rail construction in the downtown area, such as dedicating a street as a transit-only thoroughfare during peak commute periods.
