Santa Clara VTA schedules public meetings on BART extension

Next month, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) officials plan to hold two open houses to provide local residents information about the proposed $4 billion Bay Area Rapid Transit extension to Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara, Calif.

At the Feb. 2 and Feb. 10 meetings, officials will provide updated information on the project’s environmental process, schedule and community outreach activities, and review preliminary engineering work being conducted along the San Jose corridor.

The 16.3-mile extension would include seven stations, and a maintenance and vehicle storage yard in San Jose/Santa Clara. The line also might be extended to the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport.

Service on the extension could begin in 2013. The project would be funded through VTA’s Measure A local sales tax, the state of California’s Traffic Congestion Relief Program and federal dollars.
