American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently released its 2003 Progress Report for America’s Infrastructure, which graded the nation’s transit system a C minus — and falling.
Efforts to maintain transit systems are outpaced by ridership growth, which has increased 22 percent since 1998, ASCE said in a prepared statement.
Although the federal government provides $7.66 billion annually in mass-transit capital-improvement funds, capital outlays by all governments would have to double to meet projected maintenance and improvement costs, according to the report.
