Material Technologies Inc. is marketing its Electrochemical Fatigue Sensor (EFS) inspection system as a way for railroads to meet the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) continuous-welded rail (CWR) safety requirements.
An FRA interim rule issued in December 2005 requires railroads to conduct regular visual inspections of joint bars in CWR to identify visible or detectable cracks, loose or missing bolts, or other damage.
The EFS system is designed to detect small growing cracks in metal structures. The system’s sensors can be applied to joint bars to identify cracks as a train rolls over a rail joint.
Transportation Technology Center Inc. plans to test EFS at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST) track in Pueblo, Colo. During the trail, a test train will cross over a FAST track steel bridge equipped with the system more than 100 times daily.
