Intermodal: U.S. roads continue to pump up the volume

U.S. freight roads' latest record for weekly intermodal volume didn't last a month. After reaching an all-time high of 202,551 trailers and containers moved the week ended Aug. 31, U.S. railroads moved 206,454 trailers and containers the week ended Sept. 21, according to Association of American Railroads data released Sept. 26.
The record total also represents a 9.6 percent volume increase compared with a comparable 2001 week.
Through the year's first 38 weeks, U.S. roads moved 6,831,864 trailers and containers, rising 5.5 percent compared with a similar 2001 period.
Canadian roads recorded similar intermodal gains: During the week ended Sept. 21, they moved 42,231 trailers and containers, up 11 percent, and through the year's first 38 weeks moved 1,445,044 trailers and containers, rising 9.7 percent, compared with similar 2001 periods.
The intermodal news through 2002's first 38 weeks is equally good for 16 reporting U.S. and Canadian railroads, which cumulatively moved 8,276,908 trailers and containers, increasing 6.2 percent compared with 2001's first 38 weeks.
