FreightCar America Inc. recently formed a joint venture with Indian rail-car builder Titagarh Wagons Ltd. to develop freight cars in India.

The parties initially will develop prototype cars based on FreightCar America designs and assess the Indian market. Pending market conditions, FreightCar America and Titagarh expect to begin producing cars in 2009 using FreightCar America's manufacturing methods.

Last year, GE Equipment Services formed a strategic partnership with Titagarh under which GE provides financing, operating and monitoring services to Titagarh and acquired a 15 percent in the Indian company. Titagarh is using the financing to accelerate manufacturing.

FreightCar America builds bulk commodity, flat, mill gondola, intermodal and coil steel cars and motor vehicle carriers.
