Fewer freight trains, more passengers crossed U.S. borders in '08, BTS data shows

Last year, 40,042 trains crossed the U.S. border from Canada and Mexico compared with 41,010 trains in 2007, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
Truck crossings in 2008 totaled 10.8 million, down 6 percent year over year. Loaded rail containers fell from 1.75 million in 2007 to 1.3 million.
However, the number of train passengers crossing the borders increased from 2007’s 253,552 to 260,609.
