The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has selected two cities to receive assistance with transit-oriented development (TOD) near rail systems, the agency announced yesterday.

The FTA will provide technical assistance to Charlotte, N.C., to develop strategies aimed at preserving established neighborhoods and incentivizing TOD along the western end of the Gold Line streetcar corridor.

The agency also will help the city of Tacoma, Wash., identify economic development and housing opportunities along the Hilltop segment of the Tacoma Link light-rail expansion.

The work is part of the second round of the FTA's nationwide TOD technical assistance initiative launched late last year. The FTA has chosen three other cities to help with non-rail TOD plans.

"The Department of Transportation places a high priority on investing in transportation projects that improve the prosperity of low- and moderate-income communities and stimulate economic development in areas that need it," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
