Containerization & Intermodal Institute to bestow 'Connie Awards' to Devine and Ebeling

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute has named James Devine and Raymond Ebeling as recipients of 2007 Connie Awards, which recognize individuals that make significant contributions to the evolution of the intermodal industry. The institute will present the awards during a luncheon to be held Dec. 10 at The Newark Club in Newark, N.J.

President and chief executive officer of New York Container Terminal, Devine has been a "driving force for the innovation, modernization and expansion of the 180-acre terminal on Staten Island in New York Harbor and New York state's only major container facility," the institute said in an award announcement.

Devine has worked closely with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and New York City Economic Development Corp. to revitalize the Staten Island rail connection. He also introduced new state-of-the-art container-handling equipment at the terminal.

Ebeling, whose international transportation career includes stops at Sea-Land Corp. and Sea-Train Lines, is credited with developing innovative approaches, including the methodology known as "minibridge" and "landbridge," the institute said. He also founded American Auto Logistics, a logistics firm that manages the worldwide transportation of military service members' vehicles for the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute aims to promote the international intermodal industry through educational outreach. The institute established the Connie Awards — which derives its name from a shortened term for "container" — in the late 1980s.
