Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) recently contracted URS Corp. to lead a team of consulting firms that will form a conceptual design for a modern streetcar line in Charlotte, N.C.
Part of CATS’ long-range 2025 plan, the line will serve Center City Charlotte — the city’s primary employment center — and connect major hotels, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, the new basketball arena for the NBA Bobcats and Bank of America Stadium.
The line would feature traditional steel-wheeled modern streetcars powered by overhead catenary wires traveling along Trade Street on embedded rails. The line could include two four- to six-mile extensions.
URS Corp. will be responsible for resolving environmental issues, planning, and completing urban design and engineering along the corridor.
The initial Trade Street segment of the line is expected to be complete by 2009.
