After surging in March, cargo volume at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) resumed to a steady level in April.

The port in April moved 54,538 containers by rail, an 8.5% decrease compared with April 2025's mark. However, rail volume through 2026's first four months was still 2.5% greater than in the same 2025 period.

Cargo volume handled by the port's terminals in April totaled 688,163 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), an 8.4% decrease year over year. Volume through four months totaled 2,865,857 TEUs, down 3%.

April imports totaled 340,365 TEUs, down 12%, and import loads through April totaled 1,429,610 TEUs, down 4.3%.

Exports in April registered a smaller decrease at 0.4%. However, through four months, exports increased 6.4%.

CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway provide direct on-dock rail access to the port's ExpressRail Terminals; New York New Jersey Rail provides additional local freight service.
