On Aug. 20, CSX Transportation's information-technology systems were affected by a "worm" virus that's been infecting computer systems nationwide since Aug. 18.
The virus disrupted the railroad's telecommunications network, shutting down signals, and slowing dispatching and other operating systems.
As a result, CSXT halted freight and passenger trains, including morning commuter trains in the Washington, D.C., area.
By mid-day, CSXT's technology and operating teams restored key computer systems, and the railroad was able to resume most service, but some trains still were delayed.
"CSXT has confronted increasingly sophisticated computer viruses, like ones that have penetrated some of the most secure sites in the country in recent days," according to a CSXT prepared statement. "The company will continue to work to counter the effects of these viruses and prevent intrusion."
